Swimming with the Sea Turtles

My favourite thing to do while we're in Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, is to swim with one of the ocean's most majestic creatures, the sea turtles. Punta Cana offers an unforgettable experience where you can swim with sea turtles in their natural habitat. It was a discovery that we only made a couple of years ago along a stretch of beach that we walk a couple of times a week.

Punta Cana, located on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic, is renowned for its idyllic beaches and diverse aquatic ecosystems. The warm, calm waters of the Caribbean Sea provide an ideal environment for a variety of marine life, including the beloved sea turtles. These gentle creatures can be spotted swimming in the shallows, making them easy to observe and interact with.

These beautiful turtles , the Loggerhead and the Green Sea Turtle,  are protected in the region. The Dominican Republic has taken significant steps to conserve sea turtle populations which continue to be threatened.

The sea turtles are known for their calm demeanor, and it’s not uncommon for them to swim right up to you, allowing for close-up encounters. Whether you’re snorkeling or diving, the experience feels almost surreal as you observe these ancient creatures in their natural environment. Watching a turtle effortlessly navigate the water or nibble on seagrass is a reminder of the delicate balance of marine ecosystems.

The Best Places to Swim with Sea Turtles

There are several popular locations around Punta Cana where you can experience swimming with sea turtles:

  1. Saona Island: This protected area is part of the East National Park and is home to an abundance of marine life, including sea turtles. Saona Island is accessible via a boat ride, often accompanied by a guided tour that takes you to prime snorkeling spots where turtles are often seen.

  2. Catalina Island: Another great destination for marine adventures, Catalina Island offers vibrant coral reefs and a healthy population of sea turtles. The waters here are calm, clear, and rich with marine life, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling with sea turtles.

  3. Bavaro Reef: This coral reef, located just off the coast of Punta Cana, is one of the most popular spots for both beginner and experienced snorkelers. Turtles, along with rays and colorful fish, frequent these waters, and many tour operators offer turtle-watching excursions to this area.

Tips for an Ethical and Safe Encounter

While swimming with sea turtles is an awe-inspiring experience, it's essential to interact with these magnificent creatures responsibly to ensure their safety and well-being.

  • Respect the turtles: Avoid chasing or touching the turtles. They are wild animals and should not be disturbed or handled. Allow them to approach you if they choose.

  • Stay at a distance: Admire the turtles from a respectful distance. Getting too close or trying to grab them can cause stress, and you want to ensure a peaceful interaction.

  • Protect the environment: Avoid touching the coral reefs and the seagrass beds where the turtles feed. These areas are delicate and play a crucial role in sustaining marine life.

  • Use eco-friendly sunscreen: Choose a reef-safe sunscreen to protect not only your skin but also the fragile ecosystem around you. Many chemical sunscreens are harmful to marine life, so opt for natural, mineral-based products.

Our Experience

This year we brought along our snorkel masks and spent quite a bit of time watching the turtles as they grazed and swam about in the water.  It was an amazing experience to swim through the water with a turtle swimming alongside. Gliding alongside a sea turtle in the warm Caribbean waters is a memory I will  cherish forever.
