The Punta Cana Social Life for Retirees
Living the Good Life: Wintering in El Cortecito, Punta Cana
As a retiree, we've always dreamed of living abroad for a few months to experience a new culture, enjoy beautiful weather, and make some lasting memories. As stated in a couple of previous blog posts, we decided to spend three months in the charming area of El Cortecito, Punta Cana. It’s been everything we were wanting and more, and have found that staying active, both socially and physically, is key to making the most of our time.
The Beauty of El Cortecito
First things first—El Cortecito is a hidden gem in the heart of Punta Cana. It’s a quieter area compared to the bustling resort zones, yet it’s close enough to the action. The beach is just a five minute walk away, and the local restaurants, shops, and bars offer a perfect blend of Dominican culture and modern convenience.
Staying Active: Beach Walks
One of our favorite parts of this adventure has been staying physically active. Each day we try to get in a 6 km walk along the beach. This year John played pickleball three times a week. While I found it too hot to play, it was a great way to stay active for him.
Making New Friends: The Heart of an Active Social Life
What really makes this experience special, though, is the company that we've shared time with and people we've met along the way. In El Cortecito, there’s a wonderful mix of fellow retirees, many of whom are also living here for a few months to escape the cold winters back home. There's no lack of people to get together with. It's a great community.
It’s refreshing to connect with like-minded people who understand what it’s like to navigate retirement in a foreign country.
Active Night Life
El Cortecito’s nightlife is vibrant and full of energy, offering something for everyone who loves music, dancing, and a good time. The local bars and beach clubs come alive with live music or karaoke. There is always something to do.
We lean towards quieter evenings at home, or playing cards with friends. We also enjoy walking down to the "main strip" to see what's going on, or to grab a gelato.
Spending three months in El Cortecito has been a perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and social connection.
Making new friends in new places is the best!! The adventure, the stories, and the time to enjoy.

DeleteBarbara, it does sound wonderful, and I am happy that you get to experience it!
ReplyDeleteNow... how many years till my own retirement...?
LOL. I'm tempted to say that I hope retirement is soon for you, as it really is a good stage of life (of course I'm on the fun side of retirement right now, I'm sure years down the road I'll be singing a different tune.)
DeleteThe photos are beautiful! El Cortecito really does look like a dream. So glad you’re enjoying retirement!

DeleteI’m gathering that the temps are high, as well as the humidity. I think making friends over some cocktails is the recipe for me.
ReplyDeleteThe temperatures average between 28 and 32 degrees Celsius, so it does get hot. I don't find the humidity too bad, but apparently it can get quite humid in April to October.
