Safety Concerns in Punta Cana

Punta Cana is widely regarded as one of the safest tourist destinations in the Dominican Republic, with low crime rates and a dedicated tourist police force, Politur, enhancing visitor safety. In fact, Punta Cana has lower crime rates than many parts of the United States. While other parts of the Dominican Republic have a relatively high crime rate, the situation in Punta Cana is significantly different.

Tourists may encounter various types of criminal incidents, including:

  • Pickpocketing

  • Bag snatching

  • Theft of unattended belongings

  • Scams

  • Sexual harassment

That said, the risk of these crimes is notably lower in resort areas, thanks to the local government's focus on ensuring the safety of tourists.

To stay safe as a visitor in Punta Cana, consider the following tips:

  1. Stay in reputable accommodations: Choose well-known, trusted resorts, hotels, or AirBNBs with good reviews to ensure safety and security. If staying privately, use a property management company.

  2. Keep your belongings secure: Cash, jewelry, and other valuables are best left in your accommodation in a safe.

  3. Be cautious with your surroundings: Stay aware of your environment, especially in crowded areas or when walking alone. Keep an eye on your belongings at all times.

  4. Use official transportation: Stick to local public transit, authorized taxis, official ubers, or resort-provided transportation services instead of accepting rides from unlicensed drivers.

  5. Avoid walking alone at night: It’s safer to stick to well-lit, populated areas when out in the evening. If possible, travel with a group.

  6. Stay cautious with alcohol: Drink responsibly and avoid accepting drinks from strangers or leaving your drink unattended.

  7. Be aware of common scams: Watch out for offers that sound too good to be true, like free excursions or overly friendly strangers offering help. Research common scams before your trip.

  8. Respect local customs: Familiarize yourself with local laws and customs to avoid misunderstandings or unintentional offenses.

  9. Travel insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and theft.

By staying vigilant and following these precautions, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in Punta Cana.

  2. Unfortunately these incidents are not limited to vacation destinations, but for some reason the same people who go about their daily lives quite attentively forget all caution at the sight of a sandy beach? Leave their bags unattended, get involved in discussions with a braid artist who has other intentions than to beautify their hair...
    Great tips, thanks!
