First Ride of the Season

Spring has definitely sprung here in Southern Ontario, and with the warmer weather finally settling in—almost 20°C yesterday!—we knew it was the perfect time to dust off the e-bikes, charge the batteries, and head out for our first ride of the season.

We’ve had our e-bikes for two years now, and they’ve completely changed the way we enjoy cycling together. I was the first to make the switch after realizing I just couldn’t keep up with John on our rides. But it didn’t take long before he went out and got one too, once he found himself trailing behind me!

We were concerned that we would get less exercise on the e-bikes but here’s something interesting—according to a study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, people who ride e-bikes actually get more exercise than those on regular bikes. Sounds surprising, right? But the research, which looked at over 1,400 riders across Europe and North America, found that e-bike users tend to ride farther and more often. So even though they’re getting a bit of a boost, they’re spending more time out and about—which adds up to more movement overall.

One of the best things about where we live is the trail system. It winds all through town but somehow feels like you’re riding deep in the woods. You get the peaceful, scenic vibe of nature without ever really leaving town. Yesterday was no different.  we rode one trail that circled a creek.  Riding this creek meant steep hills and many bridges.  There were only a few others on the trail, which is normally very busy. It made for a very relaxing ride.

It was such a refreshing way to kick off the season—just the two of us, cruising along the trail, soaking up the sunshine and spring air.

  1. I’ve been riding my bike pretty much all year. Well, the weather is one of the perks of living in Arizona. We ride trikes. Ken’s is an e-bike, mine is Eydie-powered. I just feel that I get more out of my ride. I might be wrong, but at 73 years old, I guess I’m just old school. Have fun riding. It’s great exercise!

    1. It would be nice to be able to ride all year. I wonder if they make snow tires for bikes. lol.
Good for you for being out regularly on a regular bike. I wish I still had the stamina for that.

  2. Good to see that the snow has disappeared, and you're able to go out and about with your bikes- The route along the river looks relaxing! Happy biking!

  3. Looks like you have great views for riding! I used to love riding bikes with the family but now that it's just me and Snowball we opt to walk.

  4. I learned to ride a bike as an adult so have never felt really confident or comfortable biking. But I have tried in earlier years. We took our bikes to Arizona one year and I ride on those crazy hilly streets in Lake Havasu. Now hardly since we live in a high traffic part of Saskatoon. We have a shed of bicycles though! The guy used to fix, build and rebuild bikes. One day this summer I will bring one out again.

    1. I don't like riding in traffic either - which is why we do a lot of trails. Still, we have to ride in traffic to get to the trails a lot of times.
