A Journey to Isla Catalina

While Son #2 was down visiting us, we decided to take an excursion - a catamaran trip to Isla Catalina, one of the Dominican Republic’s most beautiful spots for snorkeling. Little did we know, the journey there would be almost as memorable as the destination itself.

The Bumpy Road to Paradise

Our day started way before the sun came up., as we had a two hour bus ride ahead of us. We boarded a tour bus in El Cortecito, and, after a few other pick-up from resorts along the way, made a stop along the highway where we switched onto a bigger bus with another group.  The plan was to head to La Romana, where we’d board a catamaran to the island.

Cue the drama.

After a very long drive, and making a detour to drop most of the group off at another excursion, we were getting closer to our destination. Suddenly our driver pulled the bus over. Flat tire #1.We were told to get off the bus and stand on the side of the road while the driver got out the spare, and changed the tire.  Not exactly what we signed up for, but hey—travel is never without a little chaos.

Back on the road, we made it maybe another 10 minutes before—yep—flat tire #2. With no more spare tires and a frustrated group of tourists, the driver had to call for help. It was going to take a while for assistance to arrive, but fortunately for us, another bus, empty at the time, rescued us We finally made it, over an hour late.

Catamaran Vibes and Crystal-Clear Waters

We boarded the catamaran and set off toward Isla Catalina, a small tropical gem off the southern coast of the Dominican Republic. Known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, soft white sand, and colorful coral reefs, the island is a popular spot for snorkeling, scuba diving, and relaxing catamaran trips. As part of a protected national park, Isla Catalina is teeming with marine life and offers the perfect blend of adventure and tranquility in a picturesque Caribbean setting.

After stopping at the reef for snorkeling, we continued on to Isla Catalina, where we spent a few relaxing hours soaking up the sun and enjoying a beachside BBQ lunch. We even had the chance to snorkel right off the shore—and it did not disappoint. The waters were clear, and the marine life was vibrant and plentiful.

Later in the afternoon, we cruised back to the mainland on the catamaran, then hopped on the bus for the return trip to our home base. Thankfully, this leg of the journey was smooth sailing—no flat tires this time!

Worth It?

Yes it was.  The journey tested our patience but also gave us stories we’ll be telling for years. Isla Catalina was a beautiful spot, especially for spotting marine life up close. That said, with the long travel time from Punta Cana, it’s probably a one-and-done for us—but definitely a memorable one.
