Travel Woes

What's the quote? "The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry." - Robert Burns

After a day of packing and running errands, I was finally ready for my early morning flight the next morning.  I had done my online check in, printed off my boarding pass, printed off cruise documents, laid out my travel clothes for the next morning, and sealed up my suitcases.  I was ready.  I needed to be at the airport for 4am for my 7am flight.  I was traveling alone as my two girlfriends were going to meet me in Fort Lauderdale later in the day.

Before heading to bed I checked my flight status. I certainly didn't want to get up any earlier than I needed to in the event that my flight was delayed.  Everything was on schedule.  Perfect!  Off to bed I went.

Before I turned out the light I was checking in with my two travel companions to make sure that everything was good on their end.  We finalized our meet up for when they arrived.

I turned out the light and then decided to grab my phone for one last check on the flight status.

What?  That can't be right.  I put my information in again and hit enter.  There it was - my flight, that was due to leave in 9 hours, was CANCELLED!

I stared in disbelief at my phone.  This can't be happening.  It took a couple of minutes for the reality to sink in and for the anxiety to take over.

John was still up and working at his computer.  Fortunately he was rather level headed and was able to calm me down a little.  We immediately began looking into flight alternatives.  I had finally received an email from the airline (about 30 minutes later) informing me of the cancelation and that they had rebooked me on a flight for Sunday morning, which would mean I would miss the cruise.

While I was on hold with the airline, waiting to speak to live person, we found a flight that would leave the next morning at 9am.  Great! We booked it.   After finally getting a live person on the line, we canceled the flight that they had rebooked me on (although we had to argue for a full refund).

While this threw me into a tail-spin, in the end it all worked out perfectly.  My two friends also had a flight delay the next morning so the timing worked out perfectly for meeting up at the airport in Fort Lauderdale.  The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry!

  5. Oh wow, cancelled fights can be so stressful. My most crazy flight cancelation experience was when a connecting flight was canceled and then I found out, with about ten minutes to spare that I had been booked onto an earlier flight. I had to run to my new gate!!! I arrived there at top speed, wondering if maybe the Olympics were in my future. The person at the gate said, "This is your lucky day. Your flight is ready for you!" Two minutes after I got on the airplane, it departed.
That was pretty dramatic. I don't think I want a rerun.
At any rate, I am excited to read about your cruise with your friends.

  6. I'm so glad it worked out in the end! That would have thrown me into a tailspin, too. Good for you for insisting on a full refund.
