The Twilight Zoo

It’s Monster Month in Elora! Every October, the town of Elora is transformed from Ontario’s most beautiful village to a haunted haven for over 100 whimsical and eerie monsters.

For almost 20 years the town of Elora, Ontario, has hosted local artist Tim Murton's Twilight Zoo. These scary lantern sculpture creations decorate the buildings and streets of Elora capturing the Halloween spirit. The town hosts a month-long celebration of creepy monsters and all things scary, and host various activities until October 31st.

I have been to Monster Month a couple of times in the past, but John hasn’t had the pleasure. This year I wanted to make sure to changed that.  We blocked off a day to make the 80 minute drive north and spend some time exploring the town and taking in the Twilight Zoo.

We enjoyed seeing the monsters during the day- well, technically, it was late afternoon- but the plan was to also see them at night.  After dark, many of the creatures are illuminated, with some glowing the inside giving them an eerie effect.

I'm glad that we visited the monsters in the afternoon and stayed for dinner to see them at night.  The atmosphere of the town changed after dark, and the lights truly do the monsters justice. We both enjoyed the day, and  I have a feeling that this will become a yearly tradition for us.

  1. Love your town's Halloween tradition and would make sure to visit every year, exactly the way you did: arrive in daylight and leave after it got dark. Very cool!

  3. The Twilight Zoo sounds like such a fun and spooky experience! My boyfriend and I are huge Halloween fans of Halloween, and this would be the perfect place for us to visit. The whimsical yet eerie atmosphere created by the lantern monsters sounds magical, especially as the day transitions to night. I love how unique this tradition is—it’s definitely going on our list of must-see Halloween destinations! Thanks for sharing this wonderful adventure!

  4. Oh, Barbara - this looks so fun!
Last year my son and his fiance choose 'Halloween Town' - St Helens, Oregon for their batchlor/ette party!! And the movie Halloweentown had been filmed there (as had part of Twilight!) and it was great!
There was even a 'wedding chapel, ' and they LOVED having guests getting married soon after (photo ops!!) Haunted house, lots of decorations and a dragon ...

    1. That sounds like a fun spot. Do they decorated the town each year in October or is it up all year?
