Friends and Newfoundland

We've just returned from a wonderful week in Newfoundland. We've been twice before and it's is one of my favorite places. I plan to write a more extensive blog post about our travels there last year but our purpose for visiting this year was simply to spend time with our friends, Roger and Val.

We met Roger and Val in 2022 while we were both in Punta Cana escaping the Canadian winter.  We started talking one day while sitting by the pool and instantly connected. We've really enjoyed getting to know them better over the past two years and find that, while we have a lot in common, the friendship is easy and relaxed.

Roger and Val spend their summers living a relaxed lifestyle in a lakefront cabin, not far from the ocean. It is a peaceful place and we had no trouble settling into this gentle way of life.

When we weren't hanging out catching up on each other's lives, playing cards, or solving the world's problems, we were off on an adventure.  We spent an afternoon exploring the nearby village and coastline.  Newfoundland is abundant with beautiful views and vistas.

The weather was sunny and warm for most of the week.  There were a couple of windy days but it didn't affect us much.  We spent some time on the boat on the lake.  We were the only ones out on the water that day which made it quiet and relaxing.

Mid way through the week, we decided to drive up to Twillingate for the day while Roger and Val attended to a few things.  Twillingate is exactly what you think of when you think of Newfoundland: a small fishing community surrounded by rugged coastline.  It is one of the most picturesque parts of Newfoundland that we have seen.

It was too late in the season for icebergs (which we knew) and a couple of weeks too late for the whales, but that didn't matter to us.  We spent some time at the Longpoint Lighthouse.  There were very few people, so we had the views all to ourselves.

Before leaving Twillingate we decided to hike the Spiller's Cove Trail which took us along the coastline.  Let me tell you, it did not disappoint! As we climbed the trail and came over the crest of the hill, we were awestruck. We lingered there for quite some time, neither of us wanting to leave.

Our last day with Roger and Val was partially spent riding through the bush in their side-by-side. We're never ones to shy away from adventure, so heading off-road down dusty and rocky trails was the perfect way to spend our last day.  We stopped at a waterfall where we spent some time climbing down to the bottom.

The next day we had to say good-bye to our friends and to Newfoundland. It was bittersweet as it felt like we were leaving a piece of our heart behind.  We will return again, hopefully sooner rather than later.  Newfoundland has cast its spell on us!
